ALBA works on water quality and
soil conservation issues with hundreds of Latino growers in
northern Monterey County, where more than half speak Spanish
as their first language. Many of these farmers are contract
strawberry growers on highly erosion-prone land, often using
conventional, synthetic pesticides and herbicides. ALBA offers
educational field days and one-on-one technical assistance
to help them manage their farms in ways that minimize impact
to local waterways and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
We are also instrumental in helping Spanish-speaking farmers
to comply with new water quality laws regulating run-off from
irrigated agricultural lands. Many field days are held at
ALBA’s 195-acre Farm Training and Research Center (historically
known at the Triple M Ranch) which, under ALBA’s management
since 2001, has become a model conservation farm. The farm
is located near Las Lomas, which is about five miles south
of Watsonville, California.
