A Little CSA History

The concept of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) emerged from a need to support small family farmers. Its origins lie in Europe and Japan, where profound relationships with local foods and among farmers and community members have existed for generations. It is an opportunity for community members to have a direct share in the farm’s harvest each year – sharing both the benefits and risks.

We value the importance of community, mutual support, and locally grown food in our lives. CSA brings agriculture back from the margins of society to a rightfully integral place. During its inception, the community often shared resources, and became partners in the joint enterprise providing for the community. In this way, risk was shared. In the thirty-year development of modern CSA's, many models have been created to meet the diverse needs of communities and farmers.

ALBA's CSA has helped connect the local community with beginning organic farmers since 2001. Along with wholesale and retail distribution through ALBA Organics, CSA was a means to develop another market for locally grown organic produce from ALBA farmers. CSA management changed hands over the years, eventually being passed on to interns who came to ALBA through international exchanges.

To further the CSA's educational potential, ALBA created a CSA Production and Marketing Apprenticeship in 2006. The Apprentice manages production of a 1.5-acre Student Farm, which is a major contributor to ALBA’s CSA, and coordinates the CSA program closely with our marketing department. This collaborative position puts into practice the Apprentice’s knowledge of farming and marketing, along with their desire to expand their skills and lead this unique effort.

As a community organization, ALBA’s goal is to make direct marketing and the CSA concept a viable option for lower income and Latino communities who may not have equal access to fresh organic produce. Methods to make this a reality will include discounts to low income households, bilingual newsletters and CSA box sponsorships.

The Nitty Gritty of our CSA Program
Subscribers may choose either a “small” or “family” box share, as well as a subscription period. Small box shares contain a variety of eight (8) produce items whereas family box shares contain ten (10) in greater quantities. Subscription periods are 12 weeks and 48 weeks from the date of the first delivery. We take a 4-week break from service mid-December to mid-January for the holidays.
